A gacha game (ガチャ ゲーム, gacha geimu) is a video game that implements the gacha (toy vending machine) mechanic. Similar to loot boxes, gacha games induce players to spend in-game currency to receive a random virtual item.

The word gacha is usually associated with gacha (countable and uncountable, plural gachas) toys sold in a plastic capsule in a vending machine, especially toys sold in or associated with Japan.

These have been transferred to the digital era with gacha games operating on the same principle of surprise and collectable characters in the game. This is also commonly known as lootboxes in Western Countries however there are differences in how they operate in Asian countries and in Western countries. Asian Gacha Games will usually target the otaku crowd and have characters drawn in anime-style for example.
