The developer of mobile MOBA Brawl Stars, Supercell has announced that all of Brawl Stars’ gacha game features will be removed in an upcoming release. Supercell hasn’t gone into full details of how this will work, but more details will be revealed during the next episode of Brawl Talk on Brawl Stars’ official YouTube.
What we do know so far is that the new update will wipe out all random chance in unlocking characters, replacing the loot box setup with a progress system where you’ll progress towards each new hero.
Is this the death of gacha games?
Far from it! Although Brawl Stars has a sizeable playerbase it is nowhere near the size of larger entrants like Genshin Impact and Azur Lane which dominate the scene alongside popular Japanese gacha game, Fate Grand Order. This gacha game is actually a small player and it is therefore likely this will cause no major blip in the gacha game scene. It is curious how they decided to remove this mechanic though given the high profit margins of gacha games. It could be because they couldn’t find a way to efficiently monetise this method of purchase or to comply with certain European laws.
Anyway, it’s always cool to see developers disavowing gacha mechanics in favour of more player friendly monetisation and we are all for it.
Lootboxes gone for good!
If you aren’t a fan of the gacha game mechanics of rng you might not want to grab a copy of this game as gacha mechanics look like they are being removed in phenomenal fashion. A huge list of rewards including themed skins is up for grabs as the developers look to start the Christmas period off with a bang!
The Bye Bye Boxes event is encouraging players to try and score a billion takedowns before the next update, unlocking loot for the whole community.
