Who is the traveler in Genshin Impact?
The traveler in Genshin Impact is the name that is referred to when describing the player character. In the game, the traveler is a dimensional wanderer to happened to get caught by a “god” in Teyvat, the region where the story is based and trapped in a cryo-sleep like state for many years. The traveler awakens to discover that their twin, who was traveling with them has disappeared! The story will then continue on solving the mystery of who that “god” was, what was the reason for your twin’s disappearance and also other smaller mysteries within each region.
Why is our twin traveler sibling described as evil in Genshin Impact?
To answer this, we have to roll back the clock and go back to what new now know in the latest Version 2.6 Update of Genshin Impact. The traveler in Genshin Impact awakens to a different world than what our twin had experienced. It is known that the twin at that time had gone on a journey and also met a frequently seen character Dainsleif and also traveled to Khaenri’ah, an ancient land that had been destroyed.
It is noted that this destruction is what changed our twin’s motivations from simply being a wanderer like us and only focused on finding our sibling to someone willing to take part in the battles in Teyvat to fight for what they believed is right. The current situation of our twin is that he or she is not above using hypnosis to control hilichurls and cause widespread destruction or pain to ensure their goals are being met even if it is merely an experiment. This is a far-cry from the peace loving traveler character we are playing as and may come as a shock to newer players when the truth is revealed. What happened to the twin in Genshin Impact?
It is not known on the details on what took place but conjecture from many Lore buffs in the Genshin Impact community are showing us that it is very much possible that the traveler must have experienced a very traumatic incident, likely the loss of a close friend or similar that would cause them to change in personality so drastically.
Now fast forward to the present, why do players consider our twin “evil” when the goal of our player character from the start has always been to simply find our twin and “go home”. The reason lies in another force currently active in Teyvat, The Abyss Order.
What is the Abyss Order in Genshin Impact?
The Abyss Order in Genshin Impact is a powerful organisation consisting of numerous mages, high level fighters and incidentally even our twin! He or she depending on your player choice at the beginning of the game is referred to as Prince/Princess indicating that they are of a high-rank within the organisation and serve to give direction to other members. It is also shown that they command high levels of respect from members of the organisation and are not above forcefully implementing their will to the detriment of other people, places or creatures.
Why is the Traveler and Abyss Order in Genshin Impact evil?
Although there is no direct reason to classify the abyss order as evil, from their point of view they are doing the “right” thing by acts such as enslaving or “freeing” hilichurls in the game as well as trying to upturn the current order and spread chaos. This all seems like a means to the end for them however, as their true enemy seems to be a much more powerful being or group of beings than the Archons in Teyvat.
It is likely that the abyss order has an extremely lofty goal which has relations to Khaenri’ah as alluded to in Genshin Impact version 2.6 where the Traveler experiences a flashback inside of the chasm.
Is Lumine the real villain in Genshin Impact?
Lumine is the name of the female twin in Genshin Impact, Aether is the name of the male twin. In the game, although Lumine does have an antagonist role it has to be noted that the main goal of the traveler, player character is more of an observer solving some problems but leaving deeper issues for the inhabitants of the region to solve. It is likely that the twin will forgive their twin of any sins because they are not as emotionally invested in the world itself, this can be noted many times because the Traveler never describes any region as “home” and this is also why they are always known only as Traveler to the general populace and Archons.
It is possible that there is a greater evil in Genshin Impact, so far the abyss order has only been shown to be one of the shadow organisations acting behind the scenes with many more operating above-board like the Fatui under the command of the harbingers and the Archon only known as the Tsaritsa.
All these organisations seem to be preparing as best they can against an even more powerful enemy as can be seen when we as the player constantly interfere in many of their plans. It will be interesting to see how the story in Genshin Impact evolves, unfortunately the Version 2,7 Genshin Impact Update has been delayed so it will still take us some time to see how the story will evolve after The Chasm update in 2.6
